Marzanna is a two-part film that explores the memories and emotions associated with the old polish tradition of drowning
marzanna. The final segment documents me and my friends reenacting the tradition in Berlin, emphasizing the awareness of
tradition and its values among people.
Marzanna is a slavic goddess linked to death, nature and winter, is honored in a polish ritual on the last day of winter.
A doll, traditionally made of straw, white canvas and colorful ribbons – is burned and drowned in a river to symbolize banishing
winter and welcoming spring.
This may i organized a screening of the movie in Weissensee to talk about folk culture locally.
The purpose of the project was to dive deeper into forgotten culture. To get to know the psychological aspect of tradition and the
process of forgetting. It is made for film screening purposes and exhibitions.

PROCESS
❖ It all started with a video that I recorder of
my friend by Spree burning Marzanna. We
made the doll at home and burned her at
the river without further explanation. Then
I decided to make a project out of it and
make interviews of my family. So, three
generations shared their feeling and stories
about Marzanna tradition.
❖ The screening was a real team work. We
had to organize an event and set
everything up.
RESULT
❖ I learned a lot about working with people
and how to mange the project. Also
learning editing program was a challenge
for me.
❖ A real help was tripod and a lens that we
bought from given money.
❖ The meeting on Weissensee was really
motivating and heartwarming. We had a
chance to receive some feed back from
them and talk about folk culture and
culture diversities.
